Our Story
The Kidney Foundation (“the Foundation”) was incorporated in Pakistan on January 15, 1996, as a public limited company by guarantee. The Foundation has been granted a licence under section 42 of the repealed Companies Ordinance 1984, (now Companies Act 2017), as a not-for-profit company. The Foundation’s registered office is located at the National Institute of Kidney and Urological Diseases (NIKUD), University of Karachi – Gate No. 04, Hijri Road, Karachi.
The mission of the foundation was to highlight the prevalent situation and create avenues for the prevention of chronic kidney diseases in Pakistan. To this end, its founding members sought to build an institution where cost-effective, high-quality medical care could be provided to said patients and where ongoing clinical research could be established. TKF approached Karachi University with these objectives in mind and was granted land on its premises in 2002.
Message from the CEO
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects a staggering 13% of our population in Pakistan, presenting a pressing concern. Globally, over 800 million individuals grapple with CKD, often stemming from underlying conditions like Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension. Treatment is costly and, in many cases, unaffordable.
There's hope on the horizon as recent developments and ongoing research hints at more effective, less toxic medicines, aiming to alleviate the economic burden of CKD.
